A red mustang and a summer night

It was a red mustang. I think it was 1964. It was my first car. I drove it to Penn State in my sophomore year. It was a stick. It was a convertible . It was heaven. I saw it today on a street in Delray. I know it wasn’t mine but there it was. 1964 red mustang convertible . A sign on it said “For Sale”. There was a crowd around it. If memory serves me correct it cost ,back in 64, around $2,300. It was the time of Route 66 with the corvette convertible traveling the country on the popular TV show. It was my version of that dream.

It seems like such a simpler time. Basic radio. Always changing the channels to find the latest hit to listen to. The Beatles were new. But then again everything seemed new then. Can we recapture that newness. Can we seek out the simpler moments in the day. I remember trying to jump in the car without opening the door. Sometimes it worked and other times it was painful. But I remember.

Simple was important back then. An open road. A favorite tune….for some reason the Dave Clark 5 …Because …was the big summer hit that year. I have it on the iPod today. When it rotates on  I go back to a red mustang on a summer night …by the beach…with her…living the dream.

The ageless experiment
