Fort Campbell, the Big Red 1 and the road trip

As we pulled into Clarksville,Tennessee we started seeing the signs. Not big glaring signs. Subtle ones. An army uniform. A pickup truck with eagles on it. A lot of American flags. The song The Last Train to Clarksville kept running through my mind. Fort Campbell is close by. The home of the 101. The Big Red one. Our car was loaded up with bags, clothes, food, bikes on the rack on the truck and books on tape. The idea was to drive from Miami to Colorado. The first day got us over the Georgia -Florida border. Day two we arrived in Clarksville. After finding a motel to spend the night we walked into the Black Horse Tavern. Our waiter was a young man who proudly filled us in on the famed 101 and the tavern’s history. My mind flashed back to Normandy Beach, D-Day and the Big Red One. You just never know what you come across on a road trip. You leave your daily comfort zone and meet America. I don’t  know what tomorrow holds in store for us but Clarksville was  a great place to drop in on.
