The leaf was pretty small as far as leafs go. It was green and pointed at one end. It had drifted down from the tree some time ago and sat there clustered among other fallen leaves. It got my attention as I walked by. Maybe it was the tiny hole in the center of it that caught me. Kind of jagged but very small. I picked it up. A tiny spider was trying to get from one side of the leaf to the other but that hole was in the way. It went from side to side. It went back and forth. It did not dare go to the hole itself. It just might fall through. So there the spider was. Clearly perplexed. I put the leaf down,spider and all, and went on my way.
Who knows for how long that little guy kept at it. Back and forth. Side to side. Not getting anywhere. Fearful of the void…the hole. Ever feel like that some times. Just one big leaf. Just one big risk. And some just go back and forth and side to side. Odd little spider.Wonder what would have happened if he entered the void. An ageless experiment.
