An imperfect lunch

We sat across from each other at the restaurant. It was a long way from the lunch counter we used to sit at in the early years.  Today it was at a swanky spot with all the bells and whistles that swanky spots are known for. Yet within a few minutes we were just those young kids starting out dreaming about the possibilities.  Friendships are like that sometimes. You time travel and relive the highs and lows but with the context of the life lived.

We used to talk about how we hoped it would play out. Now we talked about the kids and grandkids. It seemed to play out just fine. We talked about how that happened.  How does that happen. True, some is just luck. Some is the randomness of life. Right place/right time moments. But then we realized it was also about being true to our core beliefs even when those beliefs were sorely tested. We talked about embracing our imperfections and finally learning to give ourselves a break from our flaws and missteps.

Can you do that. Can you embrace your imperfections. Can you laugh at your flaws and not be so hard on yourself. Can you just appreciate your failings and move on to the next adventure. We concluded that it came down to good intentions. We promised to make this a more regular get together. Maybe so…but it was a great lunch with an old friend reliving the possible and knowing it can still be.
